The Dark Knight Rises: Some Plot Speculation (POSSIBLE SPOILERS)

THIS POST MAY CONTAIN SPOILERS FOR THE DARK KNIGHT RISES! ALTERNATIVELY IT MAY CONTAIN ABSURD FANBOY SPECULATION! EITHER WAY YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

This year will see the release of Christopher Nolan's final instalment in his Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. The internet is rife with speculation as to how Nolan's Dark Knight saga will end, and this blog is no different.  I have a theory as to how the trilogy will end. It may turn out to be a load of cobblers but I think there's a good chance I could be on to something.

First let's take a look at what we know:
So, with all this in mind, here is my theory on what will happen in The Dark Knight Rises.
  • Nolan will surprise everyone and reveal that Selina "Catwoman" Kyle is just a cover identity for Talia! This 'two-characters-in-one' trick isn't new to Nolan. At the end of Batman Begins it is revealed that Henri Ducard (an established character in the comic) is actually a cover identity for Ra's Al Ghul (Liam Neeson). 'Selina' and Bruce will of course become lovers at some point in the film.
  • Whether Talia is played by Hathaway, Cottilard, or someone else, she will give birth to Bruce's son, possibly named Damian.
  • Batman will eventually defeat Bane (and possibly Talia/Catwoman) but will be left with a broken body and will no longer be able to continue his career as Batman.
  • The film will end with Bruce retiring in order to raise his son, possibly to train him to continue as Batman, but most likely to give him the normal life that he himself was denied.

Hathaway: Is she playing two villains?

I may be way off here but I think the facts fit my theory rather neatly. Also, in Batman Begins Bruce's father, Thomas Wayne (Linus Roache) features prominently in several flashbacks, and Bruce living up to his father's memory is a prominent theme. If Bruce gained a son in the final film it would make a nice thematic bookend for the trilogy.

Damian Wayne: Son of The Bat!

So, what do you think? Have I cracked it, or am I talking out of my backside? Either way, there's one thing about the film of which we can be fairly certain. This film is going to be awesome!

UPDATE 21/7/12: Wow! I was way off. Probably for the best, what we got was much better than what I predicted. Much, much better!

  1. No, I think you're off, but not by much. It has also been said by Hardy that Nolan has a nice take on Bane breaking the Batman, and I think that starts with the state Bruce is in at the beginning of the film. I think the actual fight will go down more like the events in Frank Miller's Dark Knight Returns, where a Bane like character in the leader of the mutants beats an older and out of shape Batman in the initial fight and Batman returns to restake his claim on Gotham by beating the mutant leader. I think the Dark Knight Rises will be the beginning of Batman's more famous and longer career, as the city learns that they need the constant protector that they had hoped he would be at the end of the Dark Knight. By the end of that film he was forced into a different role but Gordon suggested that at some point, Batman could fill that role. Nolan also has talked of someone else taking over the mantle, and they would probably like to continue on this storyline. It is all owned by WB, after all. I personally would like to see an HBO or (if they had the balls for it) a major network live action series fleshing out the stories of the Nolan films and exploring the other Batman villains.

  2. Possable. It would srive far from the other ideas like John blake takeover the bat, and talia being miranda. I think Catwoman is the daughter of Carmine Falcone, in one of the comic series this was true. Bane may be the son of Ra's too, He looks and sorta speaks like him, Hardy anyway. Or maybe, just maybe Bane is Ras, after all he was blown up in begins, so maybe the lazerous pit brought him back, somewhat. Hopefully were all wrong and we can be surpised by something else better.

  3. I think Bane is forcing batman to take action against him, hence the Rise. Like arkham city, the league needs batman to be their leader. So forcing him to kill bane to assume leadership. Just a thought, probably not happening though.
I also think Thomas wayne had a connection to Ras Al Ghoul, and Thomas refused his offer. So the league killed them but left bruce, hence the surpise he found him in an Asia prison stealing his tech.
Two Face may also pop up in the asylum. It never was confirmed...
